Porn Induced Erectile Dysfunction - What is it and what are the treatments?

Nearly 90% 1 of our customers have successfully used our products to treat their erectile dysfunction. If you’re worried about the impact ED has on your sex life, it’s time to try our range of penis pump.

It has been estimated that erectile dysfunction affects 30 million men in the US alone 2. This condition can damage relationships, affect self-esteem and alter the way men experience their sexuality.

Because of the sensitivity of the subject, many men find it difficult to talk about their experiences with erectile dysfunction, and in particular porn-induced erectile dysfunction.

There have been many studies done on erectile dysfunction – the reasons behind it, treatment and so on. Porn induced erectile dysfunction (PIED) is one of the most recently discovered forms of erectile dysfunction and is more likely to affect younger men.

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Difficulty in obtaining an erection
  • Difficulty in maintaining an erection
  • A reduction in sexual desire

Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction - What is it?

Porn-induced erectile dysfunction can combine all of the above three symptoms and is a result of high exposure to porn.

Watching porn is commonplace, however, with its wide – and free – availability across the internet, there have been more and more cases of men under the age of 40 suffering from porn-induced ED.

PIED is when the brain becomes so accustomed to graphic pornography that a real-life sexual experience fails to live up to the standards set on screen.

This can lead to a condition called Sexual Anorexia, whereby the overconsumption of online pornography can lead to a loss of appetite for real life sexual interaction. The person can only feel arousal with pornographic material.

PIED presents several issues to the sufferer and to those he shares an intimate relationship with.

1. Diminished sex life

PIED means that arousal can almost only come from sexual explicit pornographic material. This means that if intimacy with a partner does happen, it is only with the addition of pornography. However, for many men suffering with PIED, all real-life encounters are impossible to fulfil which means their sex life will suffer.

2. Feelings of rejection

Of course, if the man is having problems obtaining or maintaining an erection or being able to orgasm, the partner may translate this as a fault of their own and feel unattractive and/or rejected – which create issues within the relationship.

3. Low self-esteem

Not only will the partner feel rejected, but the man will also suffer. Porn creates unrealistic standards about how sex should be. The man may compare himself to the actors on screen and feel insecure and disillusioned as a result.

4. Create a gulf between partners

Pornography explores niches and kinks in sexuality, so you can search for almost anything but you may be surprised at what turns you on. Often, a style of porn can be too embarrassing to share with a partner, and all sexual release takes place online rather than in real life. This secrecy, like any issue that isn’t spoken about, can have bigger ramifications on a relationship.

5. Stimulations become confused

Sex between people relies on sensuality and tactile stimulations. In porn, however, there are a lot of visual and auditory stimulations. Fast editing and acting can make on-screen sex appear more exciting and titillating. With PIED, it is this style of auditory and visual stimulation that starts to trigger arousal – something real life sex can find hard to compete with.

What’s the Connection Between Porn and Erectile Dysfunction?

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, is released by the brain when we experience emotion, certain thoughts and reward-motivated behaviour. The positive thoughts and feelings during sex are largely down to dopamine.

Dopamine is released during porn, but often in doses so large that it floods the brain and can damage the dopamine receptors. This means that the next time, a person watches porn, there are fewer receptors and they have to watch more porn or harder porn to capture the same sensations.

Porn is designed to titillate, but it rarely mirrors real life sexual experience. When porn-induced erectile dysfunction occurs, it is because normal sexual encounters are not enough to arouse the person – their perception of sex has been altered by their frequent use of pornography.

Porn is an exaggerated version of real-life sex. When your sexual appetite is only satisfied by pornographic images, finding arousal in real life can become very difficult.

How can you treat porn-induced ED?

Porn is at the root of this type of problem, so the best, long-term antidote to PIED is abstinence from all pornographic imagery. This period away from it allows you to re-evaluate your methods of finding sexual satisfaction. One of the best-recommended methods follows this process:

  1. Withdraw from all forms of porn for 90 days
  2. Break from masturbation for 30 days
  3. After the 30-day break is up, limit masturbation to two or three times a week – still without the use porn.
  4. During these times, try to not visualise any pornographic images.
  5. After doing this for two weeks, change the way you masturbate to mimic a real-life sexual experience – try keeping your hands still and thrusting your hips.
  6. During these times, explore how long you can maintain an erection. Stopping at intervals while masturbating, see how long you can stay hard by counting to ten, and go for longer and longer intervals.

This exercise will allow you to focus on other important physical and psychological elements without the reliance of graphic pornography. By taking away the visual, you can start to reawaken other sensations which are integral to a healthy and satisfying sex life.

Many men who are treating their PIED also find that a penis pump is an important part of overcoming the problem. Penis pumps can be invaluable in helping you physically with erection difficulties. They work by encouraging stimulation of the blood vessels all around the penis which helps build a strong erection. The Hydromax uses hydro-technology which allows warm water to form a vacuum around the penis providing a safe and effective way of improving erections.

For anyone wanting to wean off their over-reliance of pornography and begin to rebuild their real-life sexual arousal, a penis pump is a perfect device for the journey.
